About the Work

Zoom Moiré is a series of screenprints which examines the phenomenon of moiré patterns. These hallucinatory patterns can occur when two or more superimposed grids are misaligned. Contrary to traditional printmaking techniques, which prioritize registering print matrices to avoid moiré, these prints are a celebration of the pattern, which has a wide range of applications in science, engineering, and mathematics.

No two prints are identical. As moiré generation emphasizes a “shift” between print matrices, all of the prints in this series reflect that ideology. I use the iterative nature of screenprinting to experiment with moiré generation. These prints were created by intentionally misregistering spliced print matrices of digitally generated grid patterns. The order of the printed layers, the angle and positioning of the grids, and the colors of the paper and the ink all became variables which are subtly and dramatically changed in each iteration of printing.

The prints become meditations on queerness and ecological interconnectivity, as I found a powerful metaphor in the conditions under which these fluid, vibrational patterns are created.
