Sarah Hammer is an artist from Southwest Virginia currently residing in South Tyrol, Italy. She has earned three degrees from Virginia Tech: a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art, and a Masters of Fine Art in Creative Technologies.
Her art practice encompasses painting, printmaking, sculpture, and video. Her creative research centers on visual phenomena, where common language and imagery is shared between mathematics and art. Her practice investigates how rational systems such as geometries, matrices, and topologies can produce irrational and unpredictable forms. Inspired by her upbringing in the Appalachian Mountains, as well as growing up with computers, the internet, and eventually smartphones, her artwork depicts the patterns weaving between both nature and technology. Currently, her art practices engages with moiré patterns through digital and analogue processes and examines themes of queer ecology and emergence in the post-digital landscape.
